On the evening of September 19, outdoor brand Arc’teryx collaborated with artist Cai Guo-Qiang to set off artistic fireworks in the Jiangzi Relong area of the Tibet Himalayas (approx. 5,500m above sea level), sparking intense controversy. Using gunpowder explosions, Cai ignited three sequences of fireworks along the ridge, creating a dynamic “Ascending Dragon” landscape symbolizing auspiciousness and vitality.

The organizers stated that the colored pigments used in the Ascending Dragon project were biodegradable, emissions complied with environmental standards, and the display was low-intensity with minimal noise and light pollution. The team also implemented a full-chain ecological protection plan—relocating livestock, guiding animals away, and post-event cleanup and vegetation restoration—to minimize environmental impact.
主办方称,此次《升龙》项目所用烟花彩色粉为生物可降解材料,污染物排放符合环保标准,燃放等级低,噪音与光污染小。同时,项目团队制定全链条生态保护方案,从转移牲畜、引导动物,到燃放后清理残留、修复植被,力求不留生态隐患。

However, the act still drew heavy criticism. Given the fragile ecosystem of the Himalayas, netizens and outdoor enthusiasts raised concerns over the effectiveness of so-called eco-friendly materials, potential disturbance to plateau wildlife, and hidden pollution risks, urging more transparency and detailed disclosure of environmental measures.
