In the Journal's industry groupings, however, media companies are part of consumer services, mixed in with lower-paying retailers and airlines, among others. As an industry, consumer services was average in 2012 -- the median total direct compensation for the 66 CEOs in the group was $10.1 million, nearly identical to the median in the full survey of 301 CEOs, according to new analysis by consulting firm Hay Group and the Journal.

The top-paying industry, according to the survey, was telecommunications, with median compensation of $13.3 million. But that deserves a footnote because the survey included only three telecom CEOs: Randall Stephenson of AT&T Inc., Lowell McAdam of Verizon Communications Inc., and Glen Post III of CenturyLink Inc.

Excluding telecom, the best-paid CEOs were in energy and technology firms. Medians for those industries were $12.3 million.

The lowest-paid category: Utilities, not surprisingly, since many are still regulated. The median utility CEO in the survey made $7.4 million last year.

Pay structures vary by industry. Technology CEOs have the lowest median salaries, of $993,000. But tech CEOs received median grants of performance-based restricted stock valued at $7.3 million, about $2 million more than the median for any other industry.
