Japanese experts are warning of the rapid spread of a foreign insect species that destroys books. These pests eat paper and cause damage to historical documents.

Ghost silverfish are about 1 cm long and are indigenous to regions including Europe and Central America. Their presence can cause serious problems at museums, libraries and archives.

They were first discovered in Japan in 2022, when five prefectures reported their existence. By the end of September this year, the species had spread to 19 prefectures, according to a survey by the Tokyo National Research Institute for Cultural Properties.

Researchers there say that the movement of documents and materials between institutes has allowed ghost silverfish to expand their habitat. Because females can reproduce without males. They warn that even one egg is enough to allow the species to proliferate.

The institute plans to launch a website dedicated to the ghost silverfish. It also plans to send, free of charge, sticky traps and poison to places where the pest has been found.
