[00:10.84]for millions of people worldwide

[00:13.88]against the mosquito-borne disease.

[00:18.60]This year, several dengue outbreaks

[00:21.52]have happened in places across the Americas.

[00:26.60]In a statement on May 15,

[00:29.88]the U.N. health agency said

[00:32.32]it approved the dengue vaccine

[00:35.24]made by the Japanese drugmaker Takeda.

[00:40.36]Takeda's dengue vaccine is known as Qdenga.

[00:46.16]It was previously approved

[00:48.56]by the European Medicines Agency in 2022.

[00:54.80]The two-dose vaccine is given three months apart.

[01:00.00]It protects against the four kinds of dengue.

[01:05.28]The WHO recommends its use in children

[01:09.16]between the ages of 6 and 16

[01:13.28]who live in areas with high rates of dengue.

[01:18.20]Approval by the WHO

[01:20.64]now means that donors

[01:22.84]and other U.N. agencies

[01:25.72]can purchase the vaccine

[01:28.20]for poorer countries.

[01:31.44]Studies have shown Takeda's vaccine

[01:34.80]is about 84 percent effective

[01:37.96]in preventing people from being hospitalized

[01:42.44]and about 61 percent effective

[01:46.28]in stopping symptoms.

[01:59.64]He said it was "an important step

[02:04.52]of global access to dengue vaccines."

[02:09.32]The first dengue vaccine

[02:11.76]that the WHO approved

[02:14.32]was made by the drugmaker Sanofi Pasteur.

[02:19.28]The vaccine was later found

[02:21.80]to increase the risk of severe dengue

[02:25.28]in people who had not been infected

[02:28.16]with the disease before.

[02:32.00]There is no exact treatment for dengue.

[02:35.32]It is a leading cause of serious illness

[02:38.96]and death in about 120

[02:42.52]Latin American and Asian countries.

[02:47.20]About 80 percent of infections are mild.

[02:51.24]But severe cases of dengue

[02:54.88]can lead to internal bleeding,

[02:57.92]organ failure, and death.

[03:02.44]Last week, the WHO reported

[03:05.84]there were 6.7 million

[03:08.84]suspected cases of dengue in the Americas.

[03:14.20]That is an increase of 206 percent

[03:18.12]compared with the same period last year.

[03:23.40]In March of this year,

[03:25.36]officials in Rio de Janeiro

[03:28.12]declared a public health emergency

[03:31.08]over its dengue epidemic.

[03:35.08]Brazilian health officials began giving out

[03:38.52]the Takeda vaccine with the goal

[03:42.16]of protecting at least 3 million people.

[03:47.16]Infectious disease experts say

[03:49.92]climate change and the increased

[03:53.16]range of mosquitoes that carry dengue

[03:56.32]are partly to blame

[03:58.12]for the spread of the disease.
