The death toll from a powerful 7.2-magnitude earthquake that struck the central Philippines early Tuesday leapt to more than 90 people as local disaster officials scrambled to rescue survivors from buildings and assess the damage to one of the country's most popular tourist destinations.

Early estimates of the death and destruction inflicted by the quake varied, ranging from the 67 fatalities collated by the government's National Risk Reduction Management Council to the 93 persons that local police officials said had been killed. The Associated Press reported Dennis Agustin, chief of police in the area of the quake's epicenter, as saying 77 people were killed on Bohol Island. At least 15 others were killed on nearby Cebu and Siquijor.

The U.S. Geographical Survey said the quake struck near the town of Carmen on the island of Bohol 629 kilometers (390 miles) south of Manila at 8:16 a.m. local time, and centered some 56 kilometers deep. The tremor was felt across the region, collapsing part of a fishing port and killing four people in densely populated Cebu City, across a narrow strait from Bohol, according to local officials speaking to radio station DZMM.

'We are monitoring all the areas in the province with our disaster teams,' he said, adding that local officials are trying to calm residents panicking over the possibility of a tsunami hitting the area.
