干草市场事件成为工人阶级争取合法权益的象征。1889年，5月1日被选定为国际劳动节，以此来纪念这一事件。每到这天，社会主义政党和工会都会呼吁工人们为8小时工作制举行示威游行。最终，世界各地的工人运动促成了每周5天工作制、带薪休假和8小时工作制。
