Chinese ecommerce group Alibaba values itself at $133bn, up from $119bn in June, according to a US regulatory filing on Friday.

The company, which is expected to raise about $20bn in New York in what could be the biggest initial public offering ever, revealed the new valuation in updated documents about its planned listing.

The company also supplied more information to potential investors and regulators about one of its most controversial governance moves, the spin-off in 2011 of its Alipay payment processing unit to an entity controlled by its founder.

It also said in the filing that it could expand its board of directors from nine to 11. Uncertainties relating to the application for a licence convinced management it was necessary to restructure Alipay as a company wholly owned by Chinese nationals, the filing said.

The dispute was eventually settled with an assurance that Alibaba would receive royalties and income from Alipay.

The Chinese company must satisfy the SEC which provides feedback and asks for clarifications from companies seeking to list. This will be a factor in determining how soon the IPO can get under way.
