News Corp Chairman and Chief Executive Rupert Murdoch filed for divorce from his wife, Wendi Deng Murdoch, in New York State Supreme Court on Thursday, citing as grounds 'that the relationship has broken down irretrievably,' spokespeople for Mr. Murdoch confirmed.

Nearly all of the Murdoch family's voting stock─a block of 38.4%─is held through the Murdoch Family Trust, whose beneficiaries are Mr. Murdoch's six children, including his two younger girls by Wendi Murdoch, Grace and Chloe, ages 11 and 9, respectively.

Mrs. Murdoch, 44, isn't a beneficiary of the trust, according to the person. These older children are James, currently deputy chief operating officer of News Corp., and Lachlan, a former company executive who is on the News Corp. board, Elisabeth and Prudence.

Property records show that the Fifth Ave apartment is owned jointly with Wendi Murdoch, as is a Beverly Hills home. In May, Mr. Murdoch tweeted about the purchase of a 'beautiful small' Moraga vineyard in Los Angeles. He also owns apartments in Beijing and London.

Mr. Murdoch has lately raised some cash from stock sales. In February, Mr. Murdoch sold a small portion of his voting shares for a total of around $69 million through several transactions, filings show. He no longer owns non-voting shares: in November 2012, he sold what was left of his non voting stock for more than $10 million. He had sold another $62 million worth of nonvoting shares a year earlier.
