Read this passage carefully and then answer the questions that follow it:What can that Diana do for him? That modern woman working all day in an office, does she have time to look after him properly? I wonder how she attracted him, she must have used magic charms from the Siamese priest, Diana Lee. Can he take that whore out with him to go from formal functions? Can he bring his friends back to her house - can he invite people there? Every year since the War ended, on the fifth of September, he gives a big dinner here to celebrate the end of the Occupation. He makes it an occasion to invite his business associates, and the other Assemblymen, and the Governor. What is he going to do this year?By now Emily had got all her ingredients into the blangah: she stands and watches it simmering. Keong! If you can just spare a few minutes, I have to discuss something with you. I am making arrangements to rent the marquee and tables for September the fifth. I am hiring the extra staff we need for the dinner. If you want to carry on with the function, you'd better ask your staff at the office to send out the invitation.He sent out the invitations. I made all the arrangements and prepared the house. And two days before the dinner he came home, bringing his clothes and his shoes and his golf-clubs, and put them back in his own room. (a) With close reference to the passage, discuss the impressions you have formed of Emily.(b) To what extent would you agree that Emily's search for love has been met with disappointment? Refer to the whole play to discuss your response.Essay Question2. Emily is largely responsible for the misery that she brings to herself and her family. How far do you agree with this statement? Date: 7-Aug-20061(a).  My first impression I have formed of Emily is that she is devoted.  I would say she was particularly devoted to her family, household chores and events. From the whole of paragraph there, I can see that she was whole-heartedly trying to plan the big dinner. Thus she was extremely devoted and cared for the big events, for example, dinners, celebrations, marriages etc.    Emily was also devoted to her husband, Kheong. From paragraph one, she was denouncing her husband's mistress,Diana Lee.Although there is no conversation with Kheong in this paragraph,I still can say that she was still devoted to her husband and cared for him as she was very furious with Diana. Being angry means that she still loved Kheong very much, just like before, as she did not want her husband to go astray. We could also see her love for her family throughout the play, from a young child to the old grandmother of Emerald Hill. She wanted the best out of all her children and gave them advice in every part of their life all the time. Her love for her husband was also displayed as she wanted her husband to have a high social status and she looked after him all the time even after he went astray. Therefore, my major impression on Emily was that she was greatly devoted to her family, the household chores and events.   Another impression on Emily is that she is very dominating, especially in the areas of household matters.   She really took care of all the household matters, such as the well-being of family, dinners, important events, maids. In this case, it was the big dinner her husband held to celebrate the end of Occupation. From paragraph 3 and 4, "I made all arrangements and prepared the house". Just from this sentence, I can say that she put all her efforts in preparing the dinner and dominated it. Even though she may not make everything by herself, she still planned every single thing, such as the decorations, the work division and the invitations. Her dominating character was also shown almost throughout the play. As she talked to the maids, she always used a rude tone. For example, she made a big fuss out of the maid's blunder and eventually sacked her in the end of the play. Thus she was very dominating over the maids and wanted to do everything to her likings. She also was dominating over her children as she planned and scheduled everything for them. Like for Richard, she tailored-made his education and she wanted him to do according to everything she said.   Therefore, I can say without doubt that Emily was dominating in many areas, particularly in household matters. 1(b) I agree to a great extent that Emily's search for love had been met with disappointment.    Starting from young, she was abandoned by her mother after her father died. No matter how she begged her, her mother still did not want her as she said Emily was an "useless girl". When she married Kheong, she still did not get the love from many of the members of the family, her sister-in-laws. She was not accepted and was even hated before she came to the house as the sisters-in-law could not accept a Emily as their senior as she was younger than them in age.   When she grew up to become the matriarch of Emerald Hill, her search of love was still met with disappointment. First, her oldest son, Richard, committed suicide as she advised him to continue with his studies. She was very sad and took a long time get over her grieve. Her search of love had instead landed up in grieve. For her husband, although she loved and cared for Kheong, Kheong went astray and even to the extreme, did not want to see her at his deathbed. Thus we can see how Kheong hated Emily. Her love for husband was returned with total disappointment.   Therefore, I can say that most of time, she was really disappointed over her search for love.   The other side of the coin is that sometimes her love is still met. For example, her mother-in-law favoured her over the others and gave her jewellery. Further more, her advice was sometimes heard too. As for <place wst="on"></place><place></place>Doris<place></place><place></place>, she listened to her advice for her marriage was heard and her love was returned.   Although there is a little good times for Emily, she was still hugely disappointed most of the time.
