Chinese airlines have recorded about 491,000 cancellations of tickets to Japan since Saturday – roughly 32 percent of their total bookings to the typically popular destination – after Beijing advised citizens to avoid travelling there, according to a veteran aviation analyst.
One air travel analyst, Hanming Li told the Guardian it was the largest mass cancellation of flights he had seen since early in the Covid pandemic but would probably have little impact on China's domestic industry.
"It is not a huge loss for airlines because the Sino-Japan market is small when comparing to the whole domestic and international market," Li said.
According to CNBC, Japan's fragile economy, already hurt by US tariffs and declining investments in property, faces another hit.
Stefan Angrick, head of Japan at Moody's Analytics, echoed Kiuchi, saying that "a sharp drop in Chinese travel to Japan would sting". Angrick said that if Chinese arrivals were to halve, Japan's GDP growth could shrink by 0.2 percentage point.
"[This is] Hardly catastrophic, but an unwelcome drag for an economy already struggling to find traction," Angrick said.

Yoshinobu Tsutsui, chairman of the Japan Business Federation, said on Monday, "I believe it all comes down to continuing communication and dialogue across various fields, and having both sides move toward resolving the issue."
Tsutsui was speaking to reporters after he met with Takaichi at the Prime Minister's Office along with the heads of the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI) and the Japan Association of Corporate Executives (JACE).
Tsutsui emphasized that "political stability is the prerequisite for business exchanges", urging the Japanese government to continue constructive dialogue.
