He taught himself how to play the flute and other instruments with the rich cultural environment of Yunnan, serving at his first conservatory. By his teenager years, he was already leading a local children's band, setting the stage for his future. As a young man, Nie Er moved to Shanghai where he played the violin and composed tirelessly.
