I was concerned about the fact that forest and chimpanzees were disappearing across Africa. So I visited the six chimpanzee sites, learned a lot about their problems, but I also learned about the problems facing many African people living in and around chimpanzee forest habitat.

It hit me then, "If we don't find ways for these people to make a living without destroying the environment, we can't save chimpanzees, forests, or anything else, including their future."

That's where we started, more land to grow food, which meant restoring fertility to the overused farmland without chemicals, and better health and education.

Then we added water management programs, we added microfinance opportunities for women so they could start their own small, environmentally sustainable businesses, and scholarships to give girls a chance of secondary education.

Back then, practically no girls had that opportunity. Gradually since then, we've enlarged the program, but in essence, that's what it is.

Remember, every single day that you live, you make some impact on the planet. Please choose wisely, ethically, for the sake of the future, and your children, and theirs.
