Health authorities in Japan are sounding the alarm about a tick-borne infectious disease. They say cases are surging to record highs, some fatal.

The Japan Institute for Health Security says there have been 91 cases nationwide this year through June 29 and at least 9 deaths. The previous record for the same period was 82 cases set in 2023. SFTS can also be transmitted by infected cats and dogs. A veterinarian who treated one such cat also became infected and died in May.
