On June 27 local time, U.S. President Donald Trump spoke at a White House press conference about threats to his life, stating that being President of the United States is a “dangerous position.” He added that had he known how dangerous it would be, he might not have run for office.

When asked by the media about such threats, Trump recalled the moment in July last year when a bullet grazed his ear during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. “From time to time, I still get that jolt of fear—it’s a dangerous job,” he said.

He went on to say that being President is even riskier than some of the world’s most dangerous professions. “For example, race car drivers have a fatality rate of 0.1%. Bullfighters—also 0.1%. Not very high, but people still die. As President, the fatality rate is about 5%. If someone had told me that earlier, maybe I wouldn’t have run. It really is a very dangerous job.”

Of the 45 U.S. presidents, four have been assassinated, and several others—both sitting presidents and presidential candidates—have survived assassination attempts.

Trump himself has been the target of multiple threats. Law enforcement officials say that in September of last year, Trump was the victim of an attempted stabbing at his golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida. The suspect is facing five federal charges and has pleaded not guilty.

According to a Reuters report, the United States is currently undergoing its most sustained period of political violence since the 1970s. Since Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, there have been over 300 politically motivated violent incidents.
