A video showing renowned mathematician Wei Dongyi being surrounded and photographed by multiple onlookers while eating alone in a university cafeteria has gone viral online, igniting widespread discussion about the boundaries of public curiosity and the right to privacy for scholars.
The footage depicts individuals crowding around Wei, taking photos and requesting selfies. Some can be heard asking companions, "Did you get the shot?" Throughout the encounter, Wei appeared to ignore the commotion, focusing solely on his meal.

Many netizens expressed discomfort, describing the scene as "suffocating" and a blatant invasion of personal space. This incident follows Wei's previous statement to reporters that he wished to avoid further public commentary, indicating that media attention has already impacted him significantly.

In response, representatives from Peking University's School of Mathematical Sciences and the Beijing International Center for Mathematical Research issued a joint appeal. They urged the public to help "protect the tranquil environment scholars need for focused academic work," emphasizing the importance of allowing Wei to pursue his teaching and research with "undistracted concentration".

An editorial by China Youth Daily sharply criticized the phenomenon: "Does excessive deification and disturbance of outstanding young scholars truly demonstrate a love for knowledge? Paying attention to academic figures and affairs in such an anti-intellectual manner likely moves us in the opposite direction of respecting knowledge."
The commentary acknowledged that public curiosity about exceptional talents and elite universities is understandable. It noted that certain specialized fields naturally involve significant knowledge barriers – Wei's complex mathematical research, for instance, remains largely inaccessible to the general public. However, it stressed that "this curiosity and admiration should never degrade into bottomless gossip or deification through excessive praise". Such behavior, the paper argued, not only exploits knowledge and academia but also causes distress and potential harm to the individuals involved.
