Sales of new Tesla electric cars are collapsing across Europe, the latest data shows.

Figures for April also show that the UK is falling behind in its hopes to be the European leader in zero emission vehicles, with sales of electric cars in Britain falling behind a resurgent Germany and France.

Statistics from across Europe collated by ACEA, the European automobile manufacturers association, reveals that Tesla registrations nearly halved in April to 7,261 from 14,228 in the same month last year.

For the first four months of 2025, Tesla sold 61,320 new vehicles, down 38 per cent from the 100,255, the American car company sold between January and April last year.

The figures indicate that Tesla's pre-eminence in the electric car revolution is beginning to wane.

That has been ascribed to two main factors: motorists being put off by the political profile of its founder and chief executive Elon Musk and his close association with the government of President Trump; and the rise of competition from Chinese manufacturers of electric cars which are often cheaper on a like-for-like basis and according to some reviewers, superior in performance, features and finish.

According to analysis of the data by Jato, the leading automotive consultancy, the leading Chinese insurgent, BYD, overtook Tesla in April with its sales of electric cars coming in marginally ahead.

Registrations of all new vehicles fell marginally across Europe in April to 1.07 million from 1.08 million in the same month last year. For the first four months, they are also marginally down from 4.47 million to 4.45 million.

Sales of battery electric cars were up 27 per cent at 184,000 in April and up at a similar rate in the first months at 758,000. Electric cars are accounting for about 17 per cent of all sales.

However, there has been a marked shift in where those electric cars are being sold. In the UK zero-emission car registrations rose just 8 per cent in April at 24,500 though they remain 35 per cent ahead in the year to date at 144,000.

That slowdown in April coincided with the decision by the UK government to relax its zero emission vehicle mandate, quota regulations which last year prompted manufacturers of electric cars to ship to the UK to avoid a build up of penalties for not meeting sales thresholds.

Germany, which had last year been reporting a major decline in electric car sales following its decision to end financial incentives, has regained its dominance of the continental market. Last month, electric sales in the country were up by more than 50 per cent and Germany has now sold 158,000 zero emission cars in the first four months of the year.

"Registrations are showing signs of recovery despite the ongoing unpredictable global economic environment," said the ACEA in its monthly report. "The battery-electric car market share for the year to date is still far from where it was expected to be."
