这后一句很好懂，是叫他先做好眼前的工作，

可这前一句…数什么，chicken?

难道也和“吃鸡”有关？

Don’t count your chickens! 什么意思？

这句话其实简写于俗语：

Don't count your chickens before they're hatched!

意思是“蛋没孵出来，先别着急数小鸡！”

引申意是“别高兴太早！”或是“别过早下结论！”

Don't count your chickens ! The contract is not signed yet.

别高兴太早了，合同还没正式签署呢！

count on sb./sth. 指望、料想

在阅读课《80天环游地球》的第9章中，

作者写道警探怀疑福格先生：

He counts on returning to London after putting the police of the two countries off his track.

翻译：他是指望能多跑两个国家，甩掉警察之后再回到伦敦。

这里count on sb/sth 和数数可没关系！

而是说“指望某人”或“料到某事”

想向朋友表达你的义气吗？很简单！

你可以说：

You can count on me.

你可以信赖我。（放在我身上吧！）

又或者你觉得谁根本指望不上：

You can’t count on him to hold the party.
