BBC Director-General Tim Davie and CEO of News Deborah Turness have resigned following criticism that a BBC documentary misled viewers by editing remarks made by US President Donald Trump.
The controversy centered on the Panorama documentary "Trump: A Second Chance?" aired last year. The program was criticized for splicing together clips of Trump's speech on Jan 6, 2021 in a way that allegedly gave the misleading impression that he urged his supporters to march to the US Capitol.
Davie did not mention the Panorama documentary in his statement, although he said: "While not being the only reason, the current debate around BBC News has understandably contributed to my decision."
In her statement, Turness said: "As the CEO of BBC News and Current Affairs, the buck stops with me – and I took the decision to offer my resignation to the director general last night."
Donald Trump has threatened legal action against the BBC, following criticism over how a speech the US president made was edited and used in a Panorama documentary.
