General Motors on Thursday recalled a further 2.7m vehicles in the US, bringing its worldwide total for the year to 12.8m, in the latest sign of the carmaker’s efforts to reform its processes.

The bulk of the recall involves 2.44m Chevrolet Malibus and some other sedans built between 2003 and 2012 for potentially faulty brake light wiring. Other vehicles were being recalled for faults with their headlamps and a fault that might increase vehicles’ stopping distances.

The most serious fault – which could cause vehicles suddenly to lose all steering and crash with no warning – affected only 447 new pick-up trucks just delivered from factories. The company said it knew of no deaths as a result of the various faults.

The recalls come as GM, under new chief executive Mary Barra, continues to grapple with the fallout from its failure to recall promptly 2.6m compact cars worldwide over a fault with their ignition switches. GM knew as early as 2001 that the ignition switches – mainly fitted to vehicles built between 2002 and 2007 – could shift while the vehicle was being driven from the “run” to the “accessory” position. GM has said 12 people died in 31 crashes related to the fault, which could disable vehicles’ airbags.

Ms Barra has vowed to rebuild customer trust in GM, which faces a series of regulatory and congressional inquiries over the ignition switch recall.

Jeff Boyer, GM’s newly appointed head of global product safety, said the company had redoubled its efforts to “expedite and resolve” potential safety issues with vehicles.

As well as the ignition switch recalls, GM in March announced recalls of 1.5m vehicles in the US as it started what it called a “comprehensive safety review”.

GM said wiring for the brake lights in the Malibus and other sedans could corrode, leading the brake lights either not to operate during braking or to be continuously lit. There had been several hundred complaints, 13 crashes and two injuries as a result of the fault, it said.

Michelle Krebs, an independent autos analyst, said GM was seeking to address “every possible issue” it faced and avoid being accused of dragging its feet.
