腿 的 葬 礼

During Paraguay's war against Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay in the 1860s, the courage of the Paraguayans was legendary. On one occasion, General Jose Diaz decided to display his absolute contempt for his enemies by fishing in a canoe in full view of the Brazilian ironclad warships. One of the warships opened fire on him and severely injured one of his legs. Diaz managed to reach the shore, bleeding profusely, and the surgeon was obliged to amputate the leg.

Following the example of the Mexican president Santa Anna, who had his amputated leg buried with full military honours in 1838, Paraguay's president Lopez presented Diaz with the amputated leg in its own coffin.

一 八 三 八 年 ， 圣 安 纳 用 军 事 仪 式 为 自 己 一 条 切 下 来 的 腿 举 行 隆 重 葬 礼 。

【附 注 】 巴 拉 圭 总 统 洛 佩 斯 狂 妄 独 裁 ， 企 图 侵 略 邻 国 以 壮 声 威 ， 结 果 兵 败 身 死 ， 巴 拉圭 在 这 场 五 年 战 争 之 中 人 口 减 半 。 Ironclad 是 「 装 甲 的 」 ， 常 用 来 比 喻 「 不 能 改变 的 」 或 「 牢 不 可 破 的 」 ， 例 如 ： That is an ironclad proof of his guilt （那 是 他 犯 罪 的 铁 证 ） 。
