I would like to argue that such a statement is true for every countries in the world. For example. Beijing, Shanghai , and Hongkong in China are great cities because they have great universities. Lanzhou, my hometown, is also a great city since we have Lanzhou University. An excellent university can offer excellent human capital so that it can keep developing in a long period. One may argue that Shenzhen is a great city, but there is no great university in Shenzhen currently. Is that a contradiction to my statement? Certainly not. I would say Shenzhen would be better if it has its own excellent universities like ones in Beijing and Shanghai. |

take the whole world in view and you will find that most cities with famous universities are well developed inculture, science, arts and economy. so i can't agree more that the relationship between cities and universities is just like that between arteries/veins and blood. however there might be some special cases. take shenzhen for example, as an economically developed metropolis, it has no well-known universities as yet. the first city to open up to the world, shenzhen has received preferential policies from the central government, of which i think as a main cause of its fast developement. i'm sure shenzhen will become stronger ifthere could appear some world famous universities in the future. |

| different cities develop in different mode. some, such as beijing, center of politics and cultrue, develop chiefly on high-tech economic, we could call it knowledge economic. and hongkong, which is a center of financial, develop on finance and tourism. i dont think hongkong must have prestige university, though it has, because it can attract talents immigrant to hongkong for its construction. |
