Around 1999, Yu Nan met director Wang Quan'an when he was casting for "Eclipse", and the two fell in love and started a 12-year cohabitation. Wang Quan'an tailored roles specifically for her, and Yu Nan worked extremely hard: she lived with villagers on the Loess Plateau for "Jingzhe", which earned her two Best Actress awards, and integrated herself into the pastoral life in Inner Mongolia for "Tuya's Marriage", helping the film win the Golden Bear Award at the Berlin Film Festival.
