Hello, I'm Neil Nunes with the BBC News. The US Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden has selected the California senator Kamala Harris as his running mate against Donald Trump for November election. Miss Harris is the first black woman on a major presidential ticket in American history. David Willis has the details. We are told that came down to about 90 minutes before the announcement today that he telephoned Kamala Harris and offered her the job as his running mate. She accepted, of course. And then he spent the rest of the time ringing round the other unsuccessful candidates. So Joe Biden has gone through this process very meticulously. He clearly believes that Kamala Harris, who ran for the Democratic nomination herself, is a battle tested and will serve him well in combating Mike Pence and Donald Trump in November. In his reaction, Donald Trump said he was surprised that Mr. Biden had picked Miss Harris, saying she was in favor of policies such as cutting military spending and extending state-backed healthcare. He also remarked on her performance in the Democratic primaries. We'll see how she works out. She did very, very poorly in the primaries as you know. She was expected to do well. And she was, she ended up at right around 2% and spent a lot of money. She had a lot of things happening. And so I was a little surprised that he picked her. I've been watching her for a long time.
Protests have continued in Belarus for a 3rd night against the re-election of President Alexander Lukashenko in Sunday's poll, which is widely regarded to have not been free and fair. The main presidential challenger Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya is in neighbouring Lithuania, and some of her supporters say she left under duress. From Moscow, Sarah Rainsford sent this report. Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya has fled. But the protest continued into a 3rd night in Belarus. The internet was jammed. City centers blocked off. So crowds gathered where they found each other, united by their demand for change. The riot police were out in big numbers, again, still loyal to the president. They've served for over a quarter of a century. Alexander Lukashenko seems to be counting on them to crush this unprecedented surge of anger at his long rule.
New Zealand has postponed the dissolution of parliament ahead of a general election after a fresh outbreak of coronavirus cases in the country. But the Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern told a news conference that no decision had been made on whether to postpone the election. It comes after New Zealand's biggest city, Auckland, reported four new cases from a single family, the first outbreak in more than a hundred days. This is the world news from the BBC.
