In a stunning reversal of policy, the Trumpadministration on Tuesday abandoned a plan thatwould have forced out tens of thousands of foreignstudents following widespread condemnation ofthe move and pressure from colleges and majorbusinesses.

US officials announced last week that international students at schools that had moved toonline-only classes due to the coronavirus pandemic would have to leave the country if theywere unable to transfer to a college with at least some in-person instruction.

美国官员上周宣布，如果留学生就读的学校因新冠病毒疫情影响改为只上网课，而他们又无法转到至少提供部分面授课程的院校就读，则必须离开美国。

The policy prompted a string of lawsuits brought by universities and a coalition of 17 states.

Harvard University, with overseas students comprising more than 20% of the student body, andthe Massachusetts Institute of Technology, whose foreign undergraduates make up nearly 30%of enrollment, were the first to file suit.

In a highly anticipated court hearing on Tuesday in the case brought by Harvard, US DistrictJudge Allison Burroughs in Massachusetts said the US government and the two eliteuniversities that sued had come to a settlement that would roll back the new rules.
