星座是指占星学中必不可少的组成部分之一，也是天上一群群的恒星组合。自从古代以来，人类便把三五成群的恒星与他们神话中的人物或器具联系起来，称之为“星座”。占星学中所指的星座是“SIGN”，意思是“记号”、“标记”、“象征”。

而天文学上的星座的英文是“Constellation”。在英汉字典中有这样的翻译：“Signs of Zodiac 黄道十二宫”，在《英汉天文学词汇》中也有同样的意译；而在英英字典中，则诠释得更详尽：“One of the twelve equal divisions of the Zodiac”，意思是“黄道上12个均等的部分”。因此，天文历法的十二星座与占星学中所指的星座在实际意义上是不同的。
