A new commission in London will review thecapital's landmarks, street names and statues toensure they "suitably reflect London's achievementsand diversity", after a wave of anti-racism protestsheld in the wake of George Floyd's death.

Statues memorializing people who were slavers couldsoon be removed, London Mayor Sadiq Khan announced Tuesday.

"It is an uncomfortable truth that our nation and city owes a large part of its wealth to its rolein the slave trade and while this is reflected in our public realm, the contribution of many ofour communities to life in our capital has been willfully ignored," Sadiq Khan said in astatement.

The announcement comes after a statue of 18th-century British slave trader Edward Colstonwas torn down and thrown into Bristol harbor on Sunday.
