我们今天要讲的习惯用语有一个共同的词: stand。我们要学的第一个习惯用语是: stand-out。这儿在stand和out之间有一个连词符号。Stand-out当名词用。它和形容词outstanding意义相关连。不少人知道outstanding解释杰出的。那么stand-out就必然是鹤立鸡群的人或者物了。我们来听个例子，说的是一个成绩出色的学生Jennifer。

例句-1：Jennifer gets all A's in her courses. In the fall, she's going to Harvard to study chemical engineering. She's a real stand-out.

他说：Jennifer学业成绩全优。今年秋天她将上哈佛大学学化学工程。她真是个杰出人才。

这儿stand-out意思是才华出众的人。

我们来学下一个习惯用语: stand the heat。在这儿stand是动词，解释忍受。Stand the heat来自这样一句俗语: If you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen. 这句话如果直译就是：要是你受不了热，就别待在厨房里。谁都知道大热天在火辣辣的炉子旁操作的厨师是多么能吃苦耐劳，所以这句话的含意就是，果你吃不起苦就别干那一行。这句话当然不只是用来说厨师的工作，因为各行各业其中都有苦衷，甚至高高在上的总统也不例外。好，我们来听个说总统的例子吧。

例句-2：The president is always complaining about the way the press treats him. He asked for the job, though, didn't he? What I say is, if he can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen.

他说：总统老是抱怨报界对他的态度，然而不是他自己要担任总统的吗?我认为他要是受不了批评指责，就别坐总统这个位子。

可见stand the heat有吃苦耐劳、经得起批评和种种考验的意思。

我们再来学一个习惯用语: stand-up。Stand-up在这儿不是动词短语，不是"站起来"的意思。它是形容词短语，它可以有许多不同意义。我们有时候说，a stand-up guy， 意思是"顶天立地的汉子"。我们有时也说，a stand-up comic。Comic是喜剧演员。A stand-up comic指在夜总会对观众说笑逗乐、表演幽默独脚戏的演员。人们有时还说，stand sb. up。这又是什么意思呢? 让我们来听个例子吧。说话的人很生女朋友Lisa的气。我们来听听为什么。

例句-3：I had a date with Lisa at the movies last Saturday but she never showed up. She said her car broke down, but I think she's lying - I'm afraid she stood me up for some other guy.

他说：我和Lisa约好上星期六去看电影，但是她根本没来。她说她的车抛锚了，但是我觉得她在撒谎，恐怕她是为了跟别人约会而存心失约的。

所以stand sb. up是存心失某人的约。

我们还要学一个习惯用语: stand pat。Pat是打扑克拿到的一手好牌。Stand pat这句话起源于十九世纪晚期。玩扑克的时候如果轮到你补牌但是你有一手pat， 也就是手上的牌很好，你拿定主意不补牌来换手上的牌。你就说，stand pat。逐渐stand pat被用来表示坚定不移、决不改变主意。让我们听个例子，这是父亲跟他十多岁的儿子说的话:

例句-4：Look, I'm not going to argue with you any more - no, you can't use the car tonight! That's my decision and I'm standing pat on it.

他说：我可不跟你多费口舌了，你今晚绝对不能用车!这已经定了。我决不会改变主意。

所以stand pat意思就是打定主意，决不动摇。
