Foreign companies in Vietnam have pleaded with authorities to stop a repeat of deadly mob violence that has triggered factory shutdowns and sparked fears about future security in the global manufacturing hub.

Some overseas businesses are planning to reopen today after anti-China riots in industrial parks around the country last week but others are likely to remain closed as fresh details of the extent of the violence emerge. More than 3,000 Chinese nationals have been evacuated from Vietnam since the violence erupted, China’s foreign affairs ministry says.

上周越南全国各地的工业园区爆发反华暴力事件后，一些外企计划在今日恢复运营，但其他企业很可能仍然停业。同时，有关暴力行为的新的细节陆续浮出水面。中国外交部表示，自越南爆发暴力事件以来，已从该国撤出3000多名中国公民。

Mobs attacked more than a quarter of foreign companies in one southern industrial heartland, according to an official estimate, underscoring how protests against China over a maritime dispute with Vietnam have engulfed many companies from other countries, including Taiwan and South Korea.

据一名官员估计，暴民在越南南方一个工业腹地攻击了超过四分之一的外国企业，突显出一场海上争端引发的针对中国的抗议如何牵连了其他经济体（如台湾和韩国）的许多企业。

“I clearly expect the [Vietnamese] government and authorities to move the ‘battle’ away from the streets and into a meeting room,” said one non-Chinese foreign investor. “They [must] stop this immediately, if they want to maintain control.”

The pleas from foreign companies came as Beijing raced to evacuate its nationals from Vietnam by sea and air yesterday, as it scrambled to contain the fallout from last week’s deadly protests over Beijing’s drilling activities in a contested area of the South China Sea.

The official Xinhua news agency said one vessel had set sail from Haikou, a port on China’s Hainan island, and was expected to arrive in Vietnam late yesterday, citing a statement from China’s transport ministry. Four other Chinese ships were scheduled to follow.

Outraged by China’s dispatch of an oil rig to contested waters around the Paracel Islands, Vietnamese mobs descended on Chinese and Taiwan-owned factories in a dramatic escalation of the diplomatic spat between China and its neighbours over their rival maritime claims.

One industrial park executive said he expected only about half the companies in his area to reopen today, with others remaining nervous and in need of official reassurance. Many businesses supplying multinationals including Apple, Walmart and Nike closed their doors after protests began last Tuesday. “The [Vietnamese] government should apologise to international investors and do something to convince them that this kind of thing will not happen again,” the executive said.

Vietnamese police clamped down on public protests scheduled to take place yesterday in Hanoi, the capital, and Ho Chi Minh City, the commercial centre. A mass text message sent to Vietnamese mobile phone users on Saturday said Nguyen Tan Dung, the prime minister, had ordered security forces to stop illegal acts.

At least two died and 100 were injured during last week’s violence.

Almost 300 of an estimated 950 foreign businesses spread across more than a dozen industrial zones in the southern province of Binh Duong were damaged, according to preliminary estimates compiled by the provincial authorities and seen by the Financial Times.
