只 鸡 不 留

William Sherman, Union general in the American Civil War, followed a policy of deliberate destruction of the enemy territory he passed through in order to break civilian morale. In one instance, a few of his men passed a house where they discovered some chickens. They immediately proceeded to capture them, to increase the army's supplies.

The lady of the house, who happened to be at home, begged to have these spared, saying that most of her chickens had already been taken. The soldiers seemed moved, but looking at the chickens again they were tempted and one of them replied: "The rebellion must be suppressed if it takes the last chicken in the Confederacy," and proceeded to appropriate the last one.

美 国 内 战 期 间 北 军 将 领 威 廉 ． 谢 尔 曼 每 入 敌 境 ， 即 肆 意 破 坏 。 这 是 他 摧 毁民 间 斗 志 的 政 策 。 有 一 次 ， 他 几 名 手 下 途 经 一 栋 房 子 ， 看 见 有 几 只 鸡 ， 马 上 动 手 捉拿 ， 以 增 加 军 队 补 给 。

房 子 的 女 主 人 当 时 正 好 在 家 ， 恳 求 他 们 放 过 这 些 鸡 ，说 她 饲 养 的 鸡 大 部 分 已 被 取 去 。 那 几 个 士 兵 似 乎 动 了 不 忍 之 心 ， 但 转 头 再 看 看 那 些鸡 ， 还 是 忍 不 住 诱 惑 ， 一 人 回 答 说 ： 「 南 部 联 邦 即 使 只 鸡 不 留 ， 这 场 叛 乱 都 要 敉 平。 」 说 罢 ， 他 们 动 手 捉 鸡 ， 果 然 不 留 一 只 。
