are you a good language learner?do you find it easy to learn languages,
ot is it difficult for you to learn to say "one, two, three"in a foreign language?
a few years ago a group of four linguists decided to find out why some
people learn languages fast and easily, whilst others never seemed to be
able to learn a foreign language at all. was there a magic secret? were
some people naturally more able than others?they studied a variety of
language learners for a long time. these are the conclusions they came to:
good language learners:
1.are patient.they know that learning alanguage takes a long time.
they don't give up,they keep trying, even if it's hard and boring
at first.
2.try to think in the language they are learning.they know that if they
think in the language they are learning, they will learn faster and
better.
3.think about the language they are learning.they develop techniques to
improve their pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary.for example ,when
they learn new words, some learners make a picture in their heads to
help them remember the word.
4.make guesses if they don't know the answer.they are not afraid of
making mistakes.they know that they can learn from their mistakes.
very often, they will ask the person they are speaking with to correct
them if they make a mistake.good language learners listen to themselves,
and compare what they say to what they hear others saying. they make
a note of what they have learned and they think about it.
5.go to language classes.but as well as language classes ,they tru to
have as much contact with the language as possible.they do caticities
such as watching films, reading books and newspapers in the language
they want to learn,or listening to radio programs, they generally
choose the activities either to helq them with special problems they
have with the language ,or to revise language that they have already
studied.they practise as often as they can.
6.try to speak with native speakers as oftem as they can-either by going
to the country where the language is spoken,or meeting speakers of the
language in their own country.they try to communicate as much as
possible.
->so,are you a good language learner?
*yes?congratulations!
