Be brave! Hurry up to ABC Happy Express! First One: I witnessed a kidnapping. This is very serious. It means that someone saw another person being forcefully taken away, usually in a car or van. Often a kidnapper will hold someone hostage and demand a ransom in exchange for the return of the kidnapped person. Second One: Calm down. You may have noticed that foreigners tend to outwardly express their emotions more than Chinese. If a foreigner becomes very angry or nervous, he or she might start gesturing wildly or shouting. When this happens, the best thing to do is to politely say, "Please calm down sir/miss" and offer to try and help him/her. Third One: What happened? This is a great phrase to use when someone seems upset. Psychologists use this question a lot to help upset people relax. Allowing someone to vent a little and feel listened to is a great way to deal with tension and anxiety. Fourth One: What do they look like? In criminal cases this question is very important because having a witness that can correctly recognize the criminal helps convict the offender. Sometimes witnesses will confuse movie characters with real events and describe the criminal as a famous movie star! |

Learning English isn't "a piece of cake", but you can do it if you're determined. Second One: Have you ever been a babysitter? A job applicant's experience is becoming more important to employers every year. This simply asks you to state his features, such as his clothes, hair-color, figure, etc. "The boy or the puppy?" Westerners refer to their pets as "he" or "she" as if the pets were people. If you describe your pet to a foreigner and use "it" referring to the pet, the foreigner will assume that you don't like your pet very much or that you treat your pet poorly. Second One: What is his figure like? Is she voluptuous, average, slim, or skinny? It is impolite to refer to a person as "fat", instead say, thick, large, or overweight. Images of very skinny female models on TV and in magazines have made many girls feel overweight and has motivated them to lose more weight than is healthy. Anorexia is a serious problem for young girls in America. The pressure to match the images they see in advertisements is so strong that they starve themselves until they get sick. Third One: His eyes are green. This is a popular question that western employers like to ask to make candidates nervous! In fact, they ask this to know how you respond to a difficult question. You shouldn't answer by telling your greatest weakness since you might not get the job! Instead, you can tell them something that isn't directly related to the job position. Third One: Why do you feel you are qualified for this job? When choosing a gift it's a good idea to consider carefully whom the gift is meant for. While your Uncle might like a new golf club, your girlfriend would probably feel like you didn't put any thought into the gift if you bought her a new golf club especially if she doesn't play golf. Often the price of the gift is not as important as the thought that is put into it, Americans like to say, "It's the thought that counts." Fourth One: That'll be a nice gift. This expression infers that the recipient of the gift will like it and that it is a good choice. Salespeople tend to say this about expensive gifts... Why is that? |
