Born in 1960 into a strict military family in Taiwan, Zhao Wenshuan graduated from Ming Chi University of Technology's mechanical engineering program and worked as a flight attendant before his life pivoted after his parents' deaths in 1992. In 1993, he was discovered by Ang Lee for the lead role in The Wedding Banquet, launching his acting career at 32.
