Small art by the big guys is hitting the market in rising numbers. Some lower-priced works are unsigned, undocumented, poor quality or just plain ugly -- while others are charming bargains luring established collectors and newcomers alike. Below, a survey of mini-markets:

Backstory: In 2012, Christie's brokered a deal with the late artist's foundation to sell the remaining original works from his estate, many of them smaller pieces like unique photographs and drawings.

Backstory: Last year marked the artist's best-ever annual auction total, according to French auction database Artprice, thanks in part to the record sale of a $56 million pop-art canvas. Still, smaller works abound: Artprice reports about half of the late artist's works selling for around $7,000.

A single plate could go through more than four changes, known as states. Generally, the first state is the most valuable because it very likely was pulled on the press by Rembrandt himself.
