While Western leaders have loudly denounced President Vladimir Putin's moves to assert control over the breakaway Ukrainian region of Crimea, at home, even some of his critics seem to welcome the prospect.

According to new data released Thursday, Mr. Putin's approval rating climbed to two-year highs over the weekend as Russian troops began fanning out across Crimea. The rating rose to 67.8% in a poll by state pollster Vtsiom March 1-2, just as Mr. Putin received permission from the upper house of parliament to deploy troops in Ukraine.
