The Battle of Quebec in 1759 was the most important battle of the French and Indian War, whose outcome transferred control of Canada from France to Britain.

Before his attack on Quebec, British general James Wolfe stood mutely in one of the foremost boats. Suddenly he began to speak in a low voice. The gereral was reciting Gray's "Elegy in a Country Churchyard", which he had only just memorised. His aides listened quietly. Wolfe finished and said softly, "Gentlemen, I would rather have written those lines than take Quebec." An embarrassed silence followed. It might be that Wolfe had some premonition of the fate that was shortly to befall him. By brilliant strategy, he routed the French, but died of his wounds.

英军 将 领 詹 姆 斯 ． 乌 尔 夫 进 攻 魁 北 克 之 前 ， 默 默 站 在 最 前 列 的 一 条 船 上 ， 忽 然 低 声 说话 ， 原 来 是 在 吟 咏 刚 会 背 诵 的 一 首 诗 ： 格 雷 的 《 墓 园 挽 歌 》 。 他 的 副 官 都 静 静 听 。 乌 尔 夫 背 完 了 ， 轻 声 说 ： 「 各 位 ， 能 够 写 下 这 样 的 诗 篇 ， 对 我 来 说 ， 胜 过 拿 下 魁 北 克 。 」 跟 是 一 阵 尴 尬 的 沉 默 ， 也 许 ， 乌 尔 夫 对 即 将 降 临 的 命 运 有 点 预 感 。 他 凭 出 色 的 战 术 ， 大 败 法 军 ， 但 自 己 也 伤 重 去 世 。

【 附 注 】 英 法 争 夺 北 美 殖 民 地 期 间 ， 有 印 第 安 部 落 协 助 法 国 ， 所 以 英 国 人 称 这 场 七 年 战 争 （ 1754-1760 ） 为 「 英 印 战 争 」 。
