His father owns more than 1,000 ink-brush paintings by modern and 20th century Chinese artists such as Zhang Daqian, but for Alan Lo, collecting is a relatively new hobby.
The Hong Kong-born, Princeton-trained architect, who co-founded the Press Room Group chain of restaurants, owns some 50 works of sculpture, painting, photography and installation, many of which are displayed in the Hong Kong apartment he shares with his wife, Yenn Wong. His first piece, bought at the height of the Chinese contemporary art bubble in 2008, is a sculpture by 'Political Pop' artist Wang Guangyi. Depicting a female farmworker in communist garb, it now stands in his living room next to a soda-filled fridge.
Mr. Lo, age 33, initially stuck with Chinese artists and auction purchases, but he soon began acquiring work by artists from Japan, South Korea and Southeast Asia at Hong Kong's art fair, an event that introduced him to 'buying primary market,' he says.
'It's Chinese without crying out loud Chinese, which is a breath of fresh air,' Mr. Lo says.
In 2009, he made his first trip to Art Basel in Switzerland, and bought his first Western work two years later. 'Sex and Love,' by Gilbert & George, is part of the duo's 'London Pictures' series, which Mr. Lo saw at a White Cube show in London. 'I do like a bit of humor sometimes,' he says.
Today, geography isn't a factor in his collecting. 'The subject matter artists deal with is so global,' he says. 'I personally find it more interesting to look at a more international scope.' For instance, in December he bought a selection of drawings from the 1970s by Japanese artist Kazuko Miyamoto, a longtime collaborator of Sol LeWitt, at NADA, a satellite fair to Art Basel in Miami Beach. For the same reason, he recently bought a minimalist, horizontal-striped painting by Liu Wei, and has his eye on Zhao Zhao, a former assistant of Ai Weiwei.
While he enlists the help of art advisers─'sometimes you just don't have time to travel just to see one thing'─he admits he's been known to make the occasional impulse purchase. 'Afterward it's like, 'What did I do?''
Mr. Lo's favorite artists include the Philippines' Ronald Ventura, whose 'darkness' and technical skill he admires. A wall-mounted acryclic box containing a painting by Mr. Ventura takes pride of place in Mr. Lo's dining room.
He also favors Japanese painter Soju Tao, the first non-Chinese artist he collected, whose expressionist portrait of Karl Lagerfeld hangs in his living room. 'It's like having breakfast with Karl every morning,' Mr. Lo says.
Despite his family's history with ink painting─as a teenager, he studied for two years under ink master Zhao Shao Ang─he has yet to purchase one. But he recently commissioned a large-scale triptych by Hong Kong artist Frog King, or Kwok Mang-ho, which incorporates ink on paper and canvas. In addition, works from his father's collection appear at Duddell's, a new restaurant and lounge he helped open in Hong Kong's Central district.
The one medium Mr. Lo has yet to tap? Video, though that may change after seeing a work that intrigued him at the Venice Biennale's Japan pavilion two years ago. 'I used to say I would never buy video art,' he says, comparing it to buying a DVD that may or may not ever get watched.
But he's learned to keep an open mind when it comes to collecting. 'It's something down the road I definitely will consider,' he says.
