Charing Cross Road is a street in central London running immediately north of St. Martin-in-the-Fields(圣马丁教堂) to the intersection with Oxford Street and then becomes Tottenham Court Road. It is so called because it serves Charing Cross railway station(查灵十字车站).
Charing Cross Road is renowned for its specialist and second-hand bookshops. The section from Leicester Square(莱斯特广场,附近有著名的唐人街)tube station to Cambridge Circus(剑桥商圈)is home to specialist bookshops, and more general second-hand and antiquarian shops.
Most of these shops are located on the ground floor of a block owned by a housing association, which decided in 2001 to raise the rents sharply to bring them closer to the market level. Several of the bookshops closed nonetheless, including Silver Moon(银月书店), apparently Europe's largest women's interest bookshop, which became part of Foyles(富瑶书店). Other shops closed more recently, Zwemmers art bookshop(慈威玛艺术书店), Shipley the art bookshop(希普利艺术书店)in December 2008 and Murder One(一级谋杀书店)in 2009. Smaller second-hand and specialist antiquarian bookshops can be found on the adjoining(邻接的)Cecil Court.
时尚伦敦--Savile Row(萨维尔街)
Savile Row is a shopping street in Mayfair(伦敦的上流住宅区), central London, famous for its traditional men's bespoke(全定制的)tailoring. The term "bespoke" is understood to have originated in Savile Row. The short street is termed the "golden mile(黄金地段)of tailoring", where customers have included Winston Churchill(丘吉尔首相), Lord Nelson(纳尔逊勋爵)and Napoleon III(拿破仑三世), etc.
Savile Row was built between 1731 and 1735 as part of the development of the Burlington Estate, and is named after Lady Dorothy Savile, wife of the 3rd Earl of Burlington.
During the 19th century, the gentry(上流社会人士)became concerned with neat dress, and Beau Brummell(博布・鲁梅尔,英国著名纨F子弟,以其时髦服装和举止闻名)epitomized the well-dressed man. He patronized(资助)the tailors congregated on the Burlington Estate, notably around Cork Street(库克街,全世界著名的高端艺术品街), and by 1803 some were occupying premises in Savile Row. None of those original tailors survive today.
In 1846, Henry Poole is credited as being the "Founder of Savile Row" after opening a second entrance to his late(已故的)father's tailoring premises at No. 32 Savile Row; however, there were tailors on the Row long before Poole's.

9. Maurice Sedwell (1938) :
10. Norton & Sons (1821) :
