Mexico lies/is to the south of the USA. 这个句子在牛津高阶英汉双解词典的第2版south条。老外说只能够用to。

中国人学习英语很少使用工具书，而依赖“做课堂笔记”，所谓“毗连”用on，“不毗连”用to，这个错误因袭相传，经历了一代又一代的老师，谬种不断。实际上，用on 表示毗连必须和一定的动词搭配使用：

实际上，lies/is to the north/south/east/west of 也很少用，所以牛津词典2版后的各版删除了该句。 最常用的是朗文图片词典的句型：

i 'm not sure if "on the north of ..." is a grammatically wrong sentence. but i know that at least most americans will consisder it as a weird sentence. they would rather say " north of ...." or " to the north of" .

i can still remember what i was taught at school that " on" indicates a country is bordered by another. eg. china is bordered by mongolia on the north. but my american friends never speak in that way, instead, they will say: china is bordered by mongolia TO the north.

now, i m also puzzled.
