21日，一颗重达6吨，直径1.6米，价值22亿元人民币的夜明珠在海南侨乡文昌市宝玉宫展出。据业内人士介绍，此夜明珠乃今世界最大的一颗，亦是首次公开展出与世人见面。

据中国新闻网周日报道，世界上最大的夜明珠首次在中国南部的海南省宝玉宫向公众展示。这颗夜明珠直径为1.6米，重达6吨。

The world's largest luminous pearl is displayed in Wenchang, South China's Hainan province, Nov 21, 2010. Weighing six tons and 1.6 meters in diameter, the pearl is the largest ever discovered and estimated to be worth two billion yuan ($301.197 million).

在上面的报道中，night-shining jewel就是“夜明珠”，也可翻译为luminous pearl。夜明珠是大地里的一些发光物质由最初的岩浆喷发，到后来的地质运动，集聚于矿石中而成，含有这些发光稀有元素的石头，经过加工，就是人们所说的夜明珠。夜明珠在夜里能发光，故称“夜明珠”。不过，“葡萄美酒夜光杯”中的luminous wine glass（夜光杯）尽管照字面意思理解是夜里会发光的杯子，但实际上只是对着皎洁月光能熠熠生辉，在夜里并不能自行发光。

夜明珠是gemstone（宝石）的一种，其他宝石还有diamond（钻石），sapphire（蓝宝石），ruby（红宝石），emerald（绿宝石，翡翠），crystal（水晶），agate（玛瑙），amber（琥珀）等。
