WeChat is currently testing a new feature on iOS that allows users to send multiple images in a collapsed format, according to multiple social media reports.
The grayscale test, available only to some iOS users with version 8.0.69, adds a "merge send" option when selecting three or more photos or videos. When selected, the images appear as a foldable card that recipients can swipe to preview, expand to view fully, or collapse.
The feature aims to prevent chat screens from being flooded with multiple images, which currently appear vertically and can disrupt conversation flow. It has quickly risen to the top of Weibo's trending list, with users calling it a "lifesaver for work chats" and praising its "social discretion".
WeChat has not announced when the feature will be fully released. The test comes as another anticipated feature — displaying sender avatars in message notifications — is also gradually rolling out to iOS users.
A WeChat employee explained that the avatar notification feature is in grayscale release, a standard strategy to test with small user groups before wider rollout.
