China has asked all public schools to teach studentsfirst aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation as partof children's health education to address the public'slack of knowledge and competence to step in duringa first aid emergency, according to a jointstatement by the Ministry of Education and RedCross Society of China on Monday.

为解决公众急救知识和能力不足的问题，中国红十字会和教育部8月24日联合印发的通知，要求所有公立学校将急救知识和心肺复苏术纳入儿童健康教育内容。

There are as many as 550,000 sudden cardiac deaths in China every year, meaning one persondies per minute due to cardiac arrest, according to the National Center for CardiovascularDiseases.

国家心血管病中心称，我国每年心脏性猝死发病人数多达55万，相当于每分钟就有1人因心脏骤停而死。



About 60 percent of these deaths occur outside hospitals and the survival rate of a patient whoreceived CPR outside a hospital is less than 4.5 percent in China, compared with about 47.5percent in developed countries.

此类死亡病例中约60%发生在医院以外的地方。患者院外心肺复苏的成功率不足4.5%，相较而言发达国家这一概率约为47.5%。

The public in China is severely lacking in knowledge of first aid and the number of people whohave received first aid training stands at a mere 1 percent.

我国公众急救知识极为缺乏，急救培训普及率仅为1%。

In the city of Beijing, the rate is slightly higher at 4 percent.

北京市的急救培训普及率略高，为4%。
