Delegates and activists have criticized the compromise reached at the UN climate summit in Madrid, accusing major polluters like the US and Brazil of blocking stronger action. Marathon talks only agreed that wealthy nations will come up with more ambitious plans to cut emissions by the end of next year. The U.N Secretary General António Guterres said a real chance for change has been missed.

Officials in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo said at least 22 people have been killed during an overnight revolt attack near Beni city in North Kivu province. Armed with machetes, the fighters are thought to be from a militia which originated in Uganda over two decades ago. It's killed hundreds of civilians over the last five years.

Police in the Indian capital of Delhi have used tear gas and batons to disburse crowds protesting against a new citizenship law. It allows migrants fleeing religious prosecution in neighboring countries to claim citizenship but not if they are Muslim. Demonstrators set fire to vehicles and blocked roads.

Reports from France said the authorities are extraditing to Argentina a former policeman accused of torture and murder during the military dictatorship of the 1970s and 80s. Mario Sandoval was arrested in Paris on Wednesday. He is alleged to have tortured his victims on electrified bedsprings.

Thousands of anti-government protestors have gathered again in the Lebanese capital of Beirut after a night of clashes with the security forces. Dozens were injured in what were some of the worst violence since the demonstrations began two months ago.

A U.S television company has pulled four adverts that featured same sex couples kissing following pressure from a conservative group. The ads on the Hallmark channel showing bride at the altar were promoting a wedding planning website. Hallmark reportedly said it did not to generate controversy. Advocacy groups have called the decision shameful.

It's been announced that Taylor Swift will close next year's Glastonbury music festival in western England. She said she was ecstatic to perform during the coveted Sunday night, headlined slot.
