[01:06.72]B

[01:08.15]Read this article from a school magazine, written by Wei Hua, who studied in the UK for one year.

[01:16.09]School life in the UK

[01:19.75]Going to a British high school for one year was a very enjoyable and exciting experience for me.

[01:27.07]I was very happy with the school hours in Britain because school starts around 9 a.m. and ends about 3.30 p.m.

[01:36.62]This means I could get up an hour later than usual,

[01:40.22]as schools in China begin before 8 a.m.

[01:45.06]On the first day, all of the new students attended an assembly in the school hall.

[01:51.79]I sat next to a girl whose name was Diana.

[01:55.71]We soon became best friends. During the assembly, the headmaster told us about the rules of the school.

[02:04.93]He also told us that the best way to earn respect was to devote ourselves to study and achieve high grades.

[02:14.50]This sounded like my school in China.

[02:18.38]I had many teachers in the past year. Mr Heywood, my class teacher, was very helpful.

[02:26.11]My favourite teacher was Miss Burke—I loved the lessons that she gave in English Literature.

[02:34.05]In our class there were 28 students.

[02:38.22]This is about the average size for British schools.

[02:42.95]We had to move to different classrooms for different classes.

[02:47.40]We also had different students in some classes,

[02:51.60]so it was a struggle for me to remember all the faces and names.

[02:57.83]I found that the homework was not as heavy as what I used to get in my old school.

[03:04.38]However, it was a bit challenging for me at first, because all the homework was in English.

[03:12.57]I felt lucky, as all my teachers gave me much encouragement and I enjoyed all my subjects:

[03:20.44]English, History, English Literature, Computer Science, Maths, Science, PE, Art, Cooking and French.

[03:33.54]My English improved a lot,

[03:35.89]as I used English every day and spent an hour each day reading English books in the library.

[03:43.80]I usually went to the Computer Club during the lunch break,

[03:48.00]so I could send e-mails to my family and friends back home for free.

[03:53.94]I also had an extra French class on Tuesday evenings.

[03:59.03]Cooking was really fun as I learnt how to buy, prepare and cook food.

[04:06.30]At the end of term we held a class party and we all had to cook something.

[04:12.92]I was glad that all my classmates were fond of the cake that I made.

[04:19.72]Students at that school have to study Maths, English and Science,

[04:25.31]but can stop studying some subjects if they do not like them, for example, History and French.

[04:33.46]They can choose other subjects like Art and Computer Science,

[04:38.62]or languages such as Spanish and German.

[04:43.16]In the Art class that I took, I made a small sculpture.

[04:48.13]Though it did not look very beautiful when it was finished, I still liked it very much.

[04:56.18]I missed Chinese food a lot at lunch. British food is very different.

[05:02.76]British people like eating dessert at the end of their main meal.

[05:08.00]After lunch, we usually played on the school field. Sometimes I played football with the boys.

[05:15.93]Sometimes I just relaxed under a tree or sat on the grass.

[05:22.09]I was very lucky to experience this different way of life.

[05:27.04]I look back on my time in the UK with satisfaction,

[05:31.85]and I really hope to go back and study in Manchester again.

[05:37.74]Reading strategy:

[05:39.45]skimming and scanning

[05:41.92]We skim a text when we want to get a general idea of what it is about.

[05:46.67]We look at the titles, the first and last sentences of paragraphs,

[05:51.34]and the first and last paragraphs, as well as pictures and charts, to guess what the text is about.

[05:58.87]When we want to find certain information in a text quickly,

[06:02.59]we scan the text for key words and phrases, dates, numbers and so on.

[06:08.75]We do not need to read the whole text word by word.

[06:13.90]C1

[06:15.85]Read the sentences below and decide which ones are true (T) and which ones are false (F) according to the article.

[06:29.48]Read the article again carefully and answer the following questions.

[06:34.41]D

[06:43.55]E

[06:49.81]Complete his letter to Wei Hua using the words below.

[06:59.61]fond

[07:01.43]dessert

[07:03.17]respect

[07:07.18]F

[07:14.79]What subjects do you like best?

[07:17.11]I really enjoy Cooking and Art classes, because I like making things, but I'm not interested in History.

[07:24.58]I like English and Chinese best. Do you think we should study more foreign languages?

[00:01.69]Unit 1

[00:03.14]School life

[00:04.74]Grammar and usage

[00:06.92]Introduction to attributive clauses

[00:10.27]1

[00:11.28]An attributive clause modifies a noun in the same way that an adjective or prepositional phrase does.

[00:18.66]Adjective:

[00:20.16]the green team

[00:22.01]Prepositional phrase:

[00:23.69]the team in green

[00:25.64]Attributive clause:

[00:27.28]the team who are wearing green

[00:30.06]2

[00:31.08]Attributive clauses are usually introduced by relative pronouns like which, that, who, whom and whose,

[00:40.89]or relative adverbs like where, why and when. In the clause, these relative words usually function as the:

[00:50.67]subject

[00:52.24]The trees are behind the office building. They have lost their leaves.

[00:57.77]The trees which are behind the office building have lost their leaves.

[01:03.04]object

[01:04.81]We saw the student just now. He is the best runner in our school.

[01:09.78]The student whom we saw just now is the best runner in our school.

[01:14.97]predicative

[01:16.59]It used to be a small town. It is no longer a small town.

[01:22.23]It is no longer the small town that it used to be.

[01:26.64]attribute

[01:33.23]She has a brother whose name I can't remember.

[01:37.53]adverbial

[01:39.37]The school is in Shenzhen. He studied in the school.

[01:44.04]The school where he studied is in Shenzhen.

[01:48.53]Read this article from a UK school newspaper. Underline the attributive clauses you find in the article.

[01:56.73]Relative pronouns: that, which, who, whom and whose

[02:02.76]1

[02:03.63]In attributive clauses, that and which are used to refer to things.

[02:08.67]This is the story that/which we wrote for our storytelling competition.

[02:14.13]All my classmates enjoyed the cake that/which I made.

[02:19.16]The book that/which I borrowed from the library is very interesting.

[02:25.13]2

[02:26.34]In attributive clauses, we use who to refer to people.

[02:30.81]I am going to see a friend who has just come back from the UK.

[02:35.25]The girl who is the tallest in our class lives next door to me.

[02:39.95]She was the teacher who taught us English Literature.

[02:43.76]3

[02:44.98]When who is the object, it can be replaced by whom.

[02:49.42]In this case, whom is more formal than who.

[02:53.47]I don't know the name of the teacher who/whom I saw in the computer room the other day.

[03:00.87]The student who/whom we met at the school gate is from America.

[03:19.51]I'll tell you something (that) I have heard.

[03:24.26]The girl (who/whom/that) you have just seen is very good at English.

[03:31.76]5

[03:33.00]We use whose to mean possession. It usually relates to a person, but it can also relate to things.

[03:42.05]I sat next to a girl whose name was Diana.

[03:46.32]The club whose members are music fans meet in the school garden every Saturday afternoon.

[03:53.45]TIP

[03:54.58]That is more usual and less formal than which.

[04:07.84]Do you know the man that is talking to Mike over there?

[04:12.14]A

[04:13.42]Complete the following article about high schools in the USA using who, whom, which or whose.

[00:39.19]It was started two years ago.

[00:42.05]One day, I just began thinking about music for everyone, so I asked the headmaster if music could be played during break times.

[00:52.91]He approved the idea, and two years later I am in charge of the radio club as the oldest student member.

[01:02.15]Our club is much more than just music.

[01:05.61]Every morning we tell our schoolmates about the weather, recent news, and some special messages that the teachers want us to broadcast.

[01:15.96]During exam time we have a special programme that tells students the things they should do for preparation.

[01:23.70]At the end of the school year,

[01:25.92]many students who are graduating use our club to give messages to their close friends and teachers.

[01:34.39]When parents come to visit the school and talk to the teachers, we often play songs sung by students,

[01:42.54]and we also give messages to inform the parents of events such as outings and school plays.

[01:51.10]I shall miss the radio club after graduation, but I know that it will continue without me.

[01:58.98](Kate Jones)

[02:01.88]Our school club ‘Poets of the Next Generation' is a literary club that was started by our English teacher Mr Owen.

[02:12.16]We meet on the last Friday of every month to talk about poems and poets that we like.

[02:19.50]In the club meetings, we first select poems that we love, and then read them aloud.

[02:25.97]We also discuss poems in our meetings.

[02:30.23]When I attended the first meeting, I was required to write a poem and I had to read it to the club.

[02:38.20]I was a little nervous at first, but everyone was so nice and friendly that I soon stopped worrying.

[02:45.93]I once read a poem about nature in the school courtyard.

[02:50.50]I chose an old tree and gathered everyone under it before I read.

[02:56.52]The club members said it was one of the best compositions they had heard.
