To earn tuition, he worked multiple jobs—washing dishes in Chinese restaurants, promoting products in malls, and cleaning hotel restrooms. Academic struggles led to bullying by classmates who mocked him as "Chinese Monkey," pushing him into severe depression. Through sheer resilience, he graduated high school and enrolled in Ontario College of Art & Design. In a KTV gathering during his sophomore year, a Hong Kong music producer discovered his singing talent, offering a life-changing opportunity. In 1994, he debuted in Ang Lee's film The Butterfly Lovers as "Ting Wangchun," marking the start of his acting career.

Over the next decade, he became a fan favorite for his "domineering CEO" roles and historical figures like Lü Bu and Xiang Yu, showcasing masculine charisma. His versatility shone through diverse characters—from naive scholars to fierce generals—earning him top-tier status among leading actors. His dedication to acting remained unwavering despite his commercial success.

Peter first met Sun Li in 2003 while co-starring in Jade Goddess of Mercy, playing a tragic couple. As a 19-year-old newcomer, Sun Li gave her on-screen first kiss to Peter, who felt nervous due to her innocence. They reunited in 2004 for Sunshine in the Distance, continuing their on-screen romance. Off-screen, Peter developed genuine feelings for Sun Li's carefree personality. In 2005, during a variety show, he sketched Sun Li as his ideal partner, publicly admitting his three failed confessions. Rejections stemmed from Sun Li's initial perception of him as a "playboy," her growing interest in Deng Chao during the second attempt, and her established relationship with Deng Chao by the third.
