On teaching days, 77-year-old Mark Levine rises before dawn in his Haidian apartment in Beijing. His commute is a 32-kilometer journey to Minzu University's Fengtai campus, beginning with the 6:40 bus that carries him across the waking city.

Between classes, he navigates a stream of messages and commitments as a teacher, musician, and writer, moving deliberately between these roles. Each conversation, each encounter, is another thread in the tapestry he has woven over nearly two decades in China.

"I'm a visitor here. I live here," Levine says. "I consider it my home." He pauses, then adds a quiet hope: "I hope it will be my home forever."

Levine first turned his gaze towards China twenty years ago. With a PhD in sociology and three decades of experience in a US labor organization confronting poor living conditions for low-income workers, he had examined China's successes in this area from afar. "I had to study something about China, which had proven successful in its efforts," he noted, sparking a connection that would redefine his life.

It was then that he learned about Zhou Enlai, the first premier of the People's Republic of China. Years later, as he sought work in China, an offer arrived that felt like fate — a letter from Huai'an, Jiangsu province, the revered leader's hometown. In his writings, Levine would later capture the weight and wonder of his first arrival in that storied city.

It is about 6:30 in the evening, 2005, and as the car I am riding in enters the urban center of the city of Hual'an in China's Jiangsu province, there are bicycles everywhere. It looks like pictures I've seen of bicycle races like the Tour de France, except these aren't racers. They are ordinary people going home, going to work, going shopping. I'm going to my new home to start an extraordinary journey that will put me in contact with a great variety of people from all over China.

(I wandered lonely as a cloud)”,但是他不认为马克孤独:“因为他对生活在这里拥有一份热爱。”

His journey since has been vast, spanning all 31 provincial-level regions and featuring lectures at over 80 universities. In the preface to Levine’s memoir, Stories from my Chinese journey, Professor Guo Yingjian used Wordsworth's line, "I wandered lonely as a cloud," to describe him, only to refute it: Levine is not lonely. His journey was not one of solitude, but of profound connection, fueled by a deep affection for the life he found here.

In Mark Levine's apartment in Haidian, every corner tells a story. He moved here in 2007, when he left Huai'an for Beijing to teach at Minzu University.

The space is filled with lush green plants and trinkets collected from across China. He also has plenty of hats — straw hats, cowboy hats, snapbacks, and traditional ethnic caps — each a souvenir from his travels. A bookshelf overflows with volumes about China, while a music stand sits quietly in one corner. This isn't just a place where he lives; it's a tapestry of his life over the past two decades. "I consider it a museum of my life in China," Levine says.

Despite having family in the US, Levine has chosen to build his life in China. His social world in China is largely built by and with his students, past and present. He recalls one determined young woman in Huai'an who, despite her nerves, insisted on teaching herself English. Their brief online exchanges forged a lasting friendship; she is now an art teacher and a mother, her life unfolding in a county nearby.

In 2007, Levine met Fu Han, a piano teacher who would later become his manager and, in 2013, his musical partner in the cross-cultural duo In Side Out. Initially hesitant, Fu Han was moved to action during the 2008 Beijing Olympics, feeling that China's true story was not being told. She decided to collaborate with Levine on music that would showcase the China she knew.

A pivotal moment came in 2009 when Levine spent the Spring Festival at Fu Han's rural family home in Hubei province. Immersed in traditions from pasting couplets to setting off midnight fireworks, he was deeply moved by the experience, later capturing it in his song Spring Festival at the home of family Fu.

That connection endures. "Actually, I have a room in the house," Mark says, "and I have another guitar there, and I have a few other things there. But yeah, they said I am welcome back anytime."

In 2016, Levine obtained his Chinese permanent residence card, a process greatly facilitated by his 2014 Chinese Government Friendship Award. He cherishes his card for its daily utility, often carrying it instead of his passport.

Beyond singing China's stories through music, Levine is also dedicated to preserving history. He organizes lectures to share the stories of international friends who supported China during its revolutionary period.

Mark's world in Beijing revolves around the rhythms of Haidian, where he has become a familiar figure over the past 18 years. The neighborhood has transformed around him — shops changing, streets evolving — yet he remains a constant. Local shopkeepers still recognize the bearded foreigner who once appeared on television years ago, their memories bridging the passage of time.

In his apartment, a child's crayon drawing occupies a special place — a colorful depiction of Levine in his signature cowboy hat, standing beside a smiling Chinese boy. This gift from a colleague's son.

These bonds extend beyond his walls to the streets where he walks, where families welcome his approach and children see him as a friendly "Grandpa Santa" — a level of trust and warmth he notes would be uncommon in many other places.

When people inquire whether China serves as his second home, Levine's response leaves no room for ambiguity. "No, it's my home," he states. "It's the only home I have."
