Ratios can be used to compare the lifespans of different animals.

For example, a zoologist might compare the average lifespan of

a giant panda to that of a wolf, an Asiatic lion, or a giant tortoise.

The giant panda lives for an average of 15 years, the wolf has

a lifespan of 10 years, the Asiatic lion lives to 30 years, and the

giant tortoise has a lifespan of 190 years.

Ratios can show how many times greater or smaller one

number is than another.



The ratio 2 to 1 means that the Asiatic lion has a lifespan

that is 2 times longer than that of the giant panda.



The ratio 19 to 1 means that the giant tortoise has a

lifespan that is 19 times longer than that of the wolf.
