Sweden’s financial authorities are investigating how fraudsters issued a forged press release that sent the shares of a Swedish biometrics company soaring by 51 per cent claiming it had been acquired by Samsung Electronics for $650m.

“There appears to have been a fraudulent press release,” Samsung said. Fingerprint said it would report the incident to Sweden’s police and financial regulator.

The press release appeared on Fingerprint’s website – an embarrassing lapse for a company that puts security at the heart of its product offering. It was also distributed on the website of Cision, a Swedish software, public relations and news distribution group. Cision said on Friday that a preliminary investigation had revealed the company had been the victim of a sophisticated fraud.

According to Magnus Thell, managing director of Stockholm-based Cision, the fake information was given to the company by a person purporting to represent the CEO of Fingerprints, Johan Carlström.

Nasdaq OMX in Stockholm said trading in the shares had been halted after the bourse’s automatic surveillance systems picked up large and unexpected movements in the share price. All trades between 10.17am and 10.34am had been cancelled, it said.
