Butch O'Hare was a naval aviator who became the US Navy's first flying ace on 20 February 1942.

On that day, O'Hare and his wingman Duff Dufilho were in the air when they spotted eight Japanese bombers preparing to attack their aircraft carrier Lexington. They raced to confront them, but Dufilho's guns were jammed and would not fire. With not a moment to lose, O'Hare dived into the midst of the enemy, and in an impressive display of marksmanship shot down six of the bombers single-handedly, saving the ship and the lives of thousands aboard. With his ammunition expended, he returned to the Lexington, and was fired on accidentally but with no effect by an anti-aircraft gunner on the carrier. He later told the gunner calmly, "Son, if you don't stop shooting at me when I've got my wheels down, I'm going to have to report you to the gunnery officer."
