Making reservations at a restaurant Many upscale, or just plain busy by phone, restaurants require that you make reservations well in advance. They also require you to dress in formal wear -- usually a suit and tie for a man and nice skirt or dress for a woman. Don't forget to leave a 15-20% tip. The following are some of the most frequently asked questions and examples of answers at a restaurant. As always, it is best to answer in complete sentences.

Eating Etiquette

1) Never eat too quickly. Take your time. The slower you eat, the more polite you seem.

2) Never rest your elbows on the table when you eat. That is considered uncultured or rude.

3) Never talk with your mouth full. If you are chewing, don't talk until you are finished. Unlike in China, Westerners feel it is rude to talk while eating or chewing. This is a huge difference, please note it.

4) Never sip or slurp your tea or soup loudly. Take small, quiet little mouthfuls.

5) Always put your teacup on a saucer, never on the tabletop.

6) Always use a spoon to drink soup. Never just drink from the bowl. (More next week)
