Hello, I'm David Harper with the BBC News.

The 20-year U.S. military operation in Afghanistan, described as America's longest war, has come to an end. Washington's ambassador to Kabul and U.S. military commander there were on the final evacuation flight. The head of U.S. Central Command, General Frank McKenzie, announced the withdrawal. "The last C-17 lifted off from Hamid Karzai International Airport on 30 August this afternoon at 3:29 PM east coast time, and the last manned aircraft is now clearing the air space above Afghanistan. Tonight's withdrawal signifies both the end of the military component of the evacuation but also the end of the nearly 20-year mission that began in Afghanistan shortly after September 11, 2001." General McKenzie, who oversaw the U.S. pullout, said the Americans had evacuated nearly 80,000 civilians from the Afghan capital in the past few weeks. He said the cost of the U.S. involvement in Afghanistan had been high with more than 2,400 American service personnel killed.

As the last American troops withdrew from Kabul, Taliban forces fired their weapons into the air in celebration. A Taliban spokesman said that with the departure of the last U.S. soldier from Kabul Airport, Afghanistan had gained complete independence. Taliban fighters have taken control of Kabul Airport. Video footage shows them entering a hangar containing abandoned Chinook helicopters.

The U.S. Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, says a new chapter of engagement on Afghanistan has begun in which America will lead with its diplomacy. He said if Washington could work with the new Afghan government to secure its interest, it would do so. But the Taliban would have to earn support and legitimacy. Mr. Blinken also outlined the condition under which aid will be provided to the country. "The United States will continue to support humanitarian aid to the Afghan people. Consisted with our sanctions on the Taliban, the aid will not flow through the government but rather through independent organizations, such as UN agencies and NGOs. And we expect that those efforts will not be impeded by the Taliban or anyone else."

President Biden will address the American people on Tuesday on his decision to end the U.S.'s presence in Afghanistan. Earlier, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution calling on the Taliban not to provide a haven for terrorists.

The South Korean Prime Minister has said he supports calls for the head of Samsung to return to managing the global tech-firm weeks after being released from prison. Kim Boo-kyum told the Financial Times newspaper in London that it was not appropriate to curtail Lee Jae-yong's activities when he had already been freed from prison. The Samsung heir was released on parole earlier this month, having served just over half of his sentence. He was convicted of bribery and embezzlement in January in a case involving South Korea's former President Park Geun-hye who is currently in prison.
